Dragon Ball: FighterZ – Will it flop?
Unlike most Dragon Ball games released nowadays, it seems that there is a lack of playable characters in this game. Hopefully the spectacular gameplay, the beautiful graphics, and the flavor of an old Budokai game can more than make up for the pathetic amount of choose-able characters this expansion into what the franchise offers.

We don’t yet know what kind of story elements will be present in Dragon Ball FighterZ, but in the gameplay trailer above there are moments of what look like story cutscenes before some of the battles begin. We won’t speculate here, but there’s at least some interaction between the characters throughout the game. A new story trailer showed off what looks to be the future timeline in Dragon Ball Super, but this has not been confirmed by Bandai Namco. However, we can determine that Bulma and several other characters are wearing the same clothes they wear in Dragon Ball Super.
While the story will be completely new and non-canon, at the very least we know that the game covers characters from all of Dragon Ball Z, as well as bits of Dragon Ball Super. You can see in the character list below that there are characters that come from all different timelines and sagas within the DBZ universe, but we’ll have to wait for more details before we know if there’s any specific timeline the game takes place in.
The gameplay borrows concepts from several other fighting games, primarily the Marvel vs. Capcom series’ control scheme and team mechanics. Players each select three characters to form a team. One character is controlled, and can be switched with one of the other characters at any time. Players can also call one of their other characters to perform an “Assist” move, allowing simultaneous attacks and combos with the entire team. All three of the opponent’s characters must be defeated to win the game.
The universal “Vanish” and “Dragon Rush” moves resemble the Roman Cancel system commonly found in Arc System Works games and Guilty Gear Xrd’s Dust attacks respectively, while the “Super Dash” move resembles the Homing system of Arcana Heart. Players can also “Ki Charge” to manually increase their super meter, similar to previous Dragon Ball fighting games.
What do you think they could add in to make this project different, or more original? Leave your thoughts in a reply below.
